One German river is never enough.

We took it upon ourselves to compare the Rhine river with the Moselle. We drove along the banks this time, which is very easy to do as the road follows the river very closely, and even crosses it at certain villages.

There were more castles...
more vineyards...

and 'schwein schnitzel mit pommes' (crumbed pork and chips) in a beautiful setting.
We spent the night in a town called Trier, which has a history dating back to Roman times. These ruins are the remains of an arena, similar to those we saw in France.
As with most towns that have documented and preserved their long history, there is a variety of architectural styles to be seen.
This basilica dates back 2000 years to Constantine. The dimensions of the building were astonishing. The main hall has just the ground floor and the ceiling. I've never seen interior walls that tall. It has been rebuilt of course, for it to look this good after this long and after so many wars and conflicts.

The 'old town' buildings and the main square are well preserved.

They have gone to a lot of trouble to maintain the facades of the buildings while adding all the modern conveniences behind.

Trier's main claim to fame is the Porta Nigra, (Latin for black gate or door) which is listed as a significant historical site with UNESCO, constructed in the 2nd century. It is a massive stone gateway to the town. The stones have turned quite black over the years - just looks a bit dirty to me, but if they cleaned it up they'd probably have to change the name!

Crikey, Dot Dot you must be just about packing your bags to come home. Looks like you have had some amazing experiences. Good on Ag for her driving skills as you get to see so much more when you're not on an organised tour. Weather starting to warm up here. See you in a few days. V.

Homeward bound. Holidays are fabulous but its always good to be on the way home. Don't you agree.
That black stuff id some kind of bacteria . We were told in Dresden that if they clean it off the stone erodes very quickly and falls to pieces.
