Further north-west, we passed through the small town of Knock, which has a huge chapel and a car park the size of ANZ stadium. Why? To cope with all the visiting Catholic pilgrims, who flock to the place where it is believed that the apparitions of the Blessed Mother, St. Joseph AND St. John were witnessed in 1879. These quaint little souvenir shops stock Irish linen tea towels, postcards and hundreds of little plastic bottles of holy water.
Our destination on this night was Sligo, which is in the far north of the Republic of Ireland. We stayed in a beautiful old hotel that was built in 1928 and subsequently upgraded for 21st century guests.
That night, we went to a local pub for some 'craic' - traditional Irish singing, dancing and general merriment.
