Zermatt

Our conquering of the Matterhorn did not look promising with these clouds. The mountains we had been enjoying were completely engulfed on the morning that we planned to travel to even  higher altitudes.

We chose to drive a short distance to the town of Tasch, where visitors catch the passenger train to Zermatt village, from where the Matterhorn is reached.

The train is very comfortable - it looks more like a lounge room. Some travellers bring their luggage as there are plenty of hotels and guest houses at Zermatt.
Zermatt is a very classy tourist village, where you can buy a single postcard in the store next to a jewellery shop that sells Rolex watches.
It features some beautiful hotels...

and some of the fancier ones have a horse and cart service to pick you up from the train. Notice the 'nappy bag' at the back of the horse, so he doesn't soil the streets!

In the afternoon, a herd of goats is driven through the streets - just for the tourists. We all love it of course and take heaps of photos. These are very special goats. The Swiss are so efficient, they've managed to breed two colours onto the one animal. Unfortunately, we were unable to travel up the Matterhorn, due to the weather - something that can't be controlled at any time, least of all on holidays. The clouds cleared later in the afternoon and the mountain teased us that evening with this beautiful view. Next stop is Lucerne.

Isn't it the cutest town. We stayed there in a bed and breakfast called the Wilcommen Hotel. The weather is always a matter of chance in that country. We had good weather there but clouds at the Jungfrau near Thun.

What a shame about the weather. As a lad I was in Zermatt twice but never saw the Matterhorn, it was only with Diane I finally saw the thing. You'll just have to go back.

I was lucky enough to be there in clear weather in the winter of '97 - truly magical. I was a little disappointed about it as we also had cloudy weather at Mt Titlis too - it was just not meant to be.
