It's a long way to Tipperary...

...but it's only half an hour from Liverpool to Dublin in a plane. What a madhouse! The streets were alive with crowds of people, but you'd be flat out finding an Irishman among them. The day that I arrived, Dublin were playing Wexford in the Gaelic Football grand final, just a kilometre up the road from my hotel.

The River Liffey is at the heart of the city and it is traversed by MANY bridges - some for people, some for cars and some for both. The original bridge dates back to 1816 and the main thoroughfare, The O'Connell Bridge, was built in 1880.

Dublin has an interesting history, having first been settled by Vikings, who came and helped themselves to the monks' valuables. Then came the Normans, (mais oui) and then the Scottish (och aye!)

There is a predominance of Georgian townhouses...

mandatory grey, stone cathedrals and important places of learning (This is Trinity College, where the Book of Kells is displayed)...

monuments and the huge, beautiful Phoenix Park, which features gardens and playing fields and the residences of some heads of state.

Really enjoying your commentary and photos - keep up the good work. Having a cold snap here, so am sure your weather is enjoyable and not too much rain. Ann J

Hello Dot Dot. did you see any leprechauns in Ireland? Also did you get sun burnt like all the English people? It has been pretty good back hear but the bad part is I am back at school :( I got your post card and we will give it to granny. Also we have a really funny 'you tube' video called 2 dogs in a restaurant. Mum would not stop laughing. Coco still has not found her brain but I think she has become stupider. We have had a good time (except for school because it is school)and we hope your having a good time. See you when you get back. Bye bye:). Ferret

Hey Ferret. No leprechauns, sadly, and the Aussies are not getting sunburned because we are used to a clear sky. The weather reports on TV actually say, "There will be some sunshine tomorrow." One Irishman yesterday said to me, "It only rains twice a week in Killarny - the first time for 4 days and the second time for 3!"
