High on a hill above the city of Salzburg is a fortress, the building of which commenced in 1077. Additions have been made over the centuries and it has served as a residence for important Austians, a military barracks and it has also been a prison. Visitors can explore the fortress and it now houses a restaurant.
The labyrinth of rooms and halls are accessed via a funicular railway, saving your knees for climbing the twisting tower staircases. As Salzburg is the birthplace of Mozart, there are many tourist attractions, souvenir items and classical music concerts based on his life and works. We took the railcar up to the fortress one the evening, for dinner and a Mozart concert. Panoramic views of the city below were spectactular. (See previous post.) This was the view from our dinner table.
Have a look at the fancy dessert - chocolate mousse with berry sauce and white chocolate ice cream with chocolate curls - beautifully presented.Much to our delight, the nice Austrian boy in charge of ticketing upgraded us to front row, centre. We were seated in the small, 12 row concert hall on the top floor of the fortress and the sun was setting. The atmosphere was amazing and we couldn't help but be moved by the beautiful music. Magic!
I've never posted a video clip, so let's see how this goes.
