Salzburg City

One of the most outstanding features of the city of Salzburg, is the way the old city has been preserved. Salzburg has many ornately decorated buildings, beautiful churches, statues and fountains.
It also has food and craft markets set up in the cobbled streets and public squares.
Now THAT is a cheese wheel!
The old town is a labyrinth of narrow streets and arcades, with an amazing variety of shops and restaurants.
The shop signs that hang above the doors are works of art.

It would be nice to think that they were all authentic and in keeping with the historic nature of the town, but do you recognise this one?

Up in the Hohensalzburg fortress, we enjoyed a wonderful strings ensemble performing works by Mozart, who was born in Salzburg. (See the previous post.) Here are just a few images of the city from our amazing vantage point that evening.
The setting sun transformed the light grey stone walls to a rich pink brown. Then we watched a sunset that was hard to beat. (Yes that is a plane in the shot.) Perfect.

Europe at its best. Love the cheese selection and the sunset.
