The hills are alive...

The Sound of Music tour is a Salzburg institution, so it just HAD to be done! Our tour took us to some of the stand-out locations that were featured in the movie. Here is the pavillion, where Leisl sang "I am 16 going on 17"
and the tree-lined avenue where Julie Andrews skipped along with her bags on her way to the Nunnery. This is not Julie Andrews - this is our lederhosen clad guide.

Apparently the famous movie about the Von Trapp family was not well received by the Austrian people when it was first released, because the screenwriters had taken liberties with the true story and the music score was not comprised of traditional Austrian music. They have sinced warmed to the incredible success of the movie and the tourist interest just can't be denied. This magnificent house and lake was used in some scenes featuring the Baron's house.
This church at Lake Mondsee is where the wedding scene was filmed.

The pathways, hedges and stone steps in the Mirabell Gardens were also featured in the "Do Re Mi" song that Maria and the children performed. The 900 year old Hohensalzburg fortress appears in the background of this shot.
How much Sound of Music is too much? We rounded off the day with dinner and a show called "The Sound of Salzburg" featuring songs from the movie as well as traditional Austrian folk tunes and some Operetta for good measure. It was a marvellous day.

You are having great weather. The weather here in Sydney is awful, rain and gale force winds. Did you buy a dirndl to wear when you skip through the mountains and sing?

Regarding weather comments - it has been fantastic for us. We have had umbrellas up just 3 times in the last month and only for an hour or so and we've driven through some showers along the road. That's all.
