How do you make two kilograms of cheese disappear? You order a Raclette, of course. Ag and I thought we would order a traditional meal while in Les Alpes, and we expected a pot of fondue, à la 1970s. But this is the device that was delivered to us and clamped upon our table, via 2 extension cords across the restaurant floor.
The hinged grill plates allow diners on both sides of the table to heat the sides of the monster cheese wedge and as it melts, you use your wooden paddle to scrape the molten cheese onto the plate below, where you transfer it to your dinner plate.
Accompaniments included hot, cooked potatoes, bread and an assortment of cold meats. The Raclette was served with a green salad...and these are the sad remains of our meal. While it was enjoyable, we probably wouldn't be able to manage one in the too distant future.
This was the view from the front of the chalet the next morning. The next step of the journey will be a trip through the Mont Blanc tunnel into Italy. The tunnel will take us under the mountains, rather than over them.

OMG that cheese looked amazing what a great experience. I have been to French Alps in summer, just the most beautiful place. Rode my bike up a couple of those monsters. Ouch painful but great memories.
Another one of our favourite meals but it is best in winter. Looking forward to your Swiss travels. I am really enjoying your blog. Its like I'm with you. Well done. Sad news about England. Glad neither of you are there.I'm happy that my daughter is home now.
