Lucerne

Heading towards Lucerne, we were treated to more spectacular Swiss landscapes. We took another car train through an 11km tunnel under the mountains. It is a much easier way to travel.
You can see from this image, that the small towns in these areas of the alps are situated in the valleys between the huge peaks. There is often less than a kilometre of flat area on which to build, but in this picture they have managed a small aircraft landing strip.

We have had some wonderful surprises when we turn up to hotels that we have booked on the internet and the hotel in Lucerne was right beside the lake. This is the view from our balcony.

The water was just like glass and a stunning colour. We parked in the city centre and took a boat tour of the lake, along with the swans.

All manner of buildings are situated on the lake, from government offices, to corporate headquarters, to old abbeys and churches and historic houses.
A pretty suburban village called Waggis was the perfect place to disembark for some afternoon tea.
But in the short space of an hour, the calm and sunny weather changed and became a little threatening. We wondered what our return trip would be like.
A little rain storm and some gusty wind did not adversely affect the ferry ride, in spite of the white peaks that appeared on the lake. The sun came out a short time later and provided this great photograph.

Lakes, mountains valleys and castles all make up the picture book land of the Alps. I'm so glad you went there. I lived there for almost a year when we were first married. (Not Lucerne but Thun)

I hope you tried the local Schnapps in Waggis, it has a kick to it. Great reporting.
